Accessibility

Zest should work for everyone who builds a page and everyone who visits one. Here’s where we are.

What our tests check

Our test pack drives a real browser through Zest. It checks that:

  • the phone menu keeps keyboard focus inside it, closes with Esc and puts focus back where it was;
  • motion stops for anyone who has asked their device for less of it, including the splash screen and moving backgrounds;
  • nothing runs off the side of the screen at phone and desktop widths;
  • long names and links wrap inside their boxes.

When you choose colours for your page, the editor warns you if text won’t be readable against the background.

What we haven’t done yet

  • No outside audit, and no testing yet with people who use screen readers or switch access every day.
  • The checks run in Chrome. Safari and Firefox aren’t in them yet.
  • Pages are designed by the people who own them. We set readable defaults and warn about contrast, but a page owner can still choose a look that’s hard to read.

We aim for WCAG 2.2 at level AA, and we’d describe the site as partially meeting it today.

Tell us what’s in the way

If anything on Zest is hard to use, email zest@studionine.agency with “Accessibility” in the subject. Say what you were trying to do and what you use to browse. We’ll reply within two working days, and we’ll fix the problem or tell you honestly when we can.
